Speakers
Ms. Elizabeth (Betsy) Shieh, Principal Commercial Officer at U.S. Consulate General -Guangzhou
The Consulate covers south China, the fastest growing region in the fastest growing economy in the world. After joining the Commercial Service in 2005, Ms. Shieh served a two-year term in the Westchester USEAC, three consecutive tours in Beijing, China, and as Principal Commercial Officer (PCO) in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
Prior to joining the Commercial Service, she served as Executive Director of NEXCO, a private, non-profit international business association, Executive Director of the Hudson Valley World Trade Center, and was product manager at XPORT, the Port Authority of NY and NJ’s trading company.
Ms. Shieh has a master’s degree in International Public Administration and a bachelor’s degree in Foreign Languages, both from New York University. Prior to joining the Commercial Service, she lived and worked for a half year in Brazil and for 3+ years in China where she studied Chinese and worked off and on beginning in 1982. She is married to a consultant and professor of Chinese politics and has two grown children.
Ms. Jing Liu, International Trade Specialist, Office of China and Mongolia
Ms. Liu is an experienced International Trade Specialist with a demonstrated history working on China trade policy. An inter-disciplinary thinker with strong experience in international business, finance, and mission-driven work, she has served with the U.S. Department of Commerce since January 2015.
In her short tenure, she’s made a big impact earning the Commerce Department’s most prestigious award two years in a row: Awarded 2018 Department of Commerce Gold Medal for Secretarial trade mission to China and 2017 Department of Commerce Gold Medal for promoting travel and tourism through the U.S.-China Tourism Year.
Ms. Liu represents U.S. business equities in the inter-agency policy development process on topics such as standards development, information communication technology, consumer goods, and travel and tourism. She also supports senior officials’ discussions with Chinese officials including the Secretary and Deputy Secretary of the Department of Commerce. In addition, she promotes U.S. companies’ exports through meetings, receptions, trade shows and trade missions, while temporarily posted to China and South Korea.
Before joining the Commerce Department, Ms. Liu served as a freelance translator in Beijing for 1.5 years. She was a masters student at Tufts University, receiving her degrees in International Business and Global Health and Masters in International Law and Diplomacy. She also served as a consultant to an online healthcare startup back in 2013, after serving a brief stint as a political/economic analyst with the U.S. Department of State.
